The Great Afforestation of Eastern Jordan: A Project to Transform the Nation

S🌿Stretching from the far northeast of the Hashemitee

Kingdom of Jordan to its southernmost edge lies a vast, arid landscape. This region battles harsh eastern winds in the winter and scorching desert heat in the summer. Considered one of the driest parts of the country, it faces the looming threat of desertification and severe environmental degradation

But what if this silent expanse could be transformed into a thriving greenbelt?t?

📌 What is the Project About?

The vision is to plant a massive green corridor—approximately 350 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide—along Jordan’s eastern border. With a density of around 400 trees per hectare, the initiative aims to plant no less than 70 million trees.

🌱?What Types of Trees Are Suitable

To thrive in harsh desert conditions, selected species must be both resilient and ecologically valuable:

• Desert Cypress – Hardy and aesthetically appealing.

• Tamarix and Athel Trees – Salt-tolerant and drought-resistant.

• Eucalyptus – Fast-growing and effective at breaking strong winds.

• Ghaf and Acacia Trees – Excellent for soil stabilization and organic enrichment.

W🌡️What Are the Environmental and Climate Benefits?s

Reduces the speed and impact of harsh eastern winds during winter

Helps lower ambient temperatures during the hot summer months

A• Acts as a natural barrier against desertification and sand encroachment

Improves groundwater recharge and overall water sustainability

A• Absorbs carbon dioxide, improving air quality and contributing to climate change mitigation

This ambitious project could redefine the environmental future of Jordan, offering not only ecological resilience but also hope for generations to come
